The US Army introduced the .30-06 in 1906. The “.30” refers to .30 inches bullet caliber. “06” is for its launch in 1906. Its introduction replaced the 30-03, 6mm Lee Navy and the .30—40 Krag cartridges. The .30-06 was the U.S. Army’s primary rifle and machine gun cartridge for almost 50 years.
